The genetics of irritable bowel syndrome—some progress at last?

Abstract

Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a common disorder characterized by abdominal pain or discomfort that is associated with disturbed bowel function and often accompanied by bloating, distension and difficult defecation (1). IBS has a global prevalence of 2–25%, depending on the criteria used and the population surveyed (2).
